01 / THE CHALLENGE

The problem & workflow requirements.

Independent retailers and design showrooms struggle with inventory drift when purchase orders, partial receipts, floor sales, and customer returns are tracked across disconnected spreadsheets.

02 / ARCHITECTURE & SYSTEMS

Technical decisions and design.

Forma uses an event-sourced inventory model where available stock is calculated strictly from immutable movements: purchase receipts, allocations, sales, and reasoned returns. Supports partial order receiving, variant attributes, and point-in-time order snapshots.

03 / TRADEOFFS & RIGOR

Deliberate engineering choices.

A shopping basket is modeled as preparation and allocation rather than a permanent stock reservation, preventing phantom inventory lockups. Prioritizes local privacy and zero subscription costs over centralized cloud synchronization.

04 / SCOPE & REALITY BOUNDARY

What is real vs. simulated.

Working browser application with synthetic objects catalog and sample suppliers. Demonstrates full receiving and returns logic; does not connect to live merchant card terminals.
